Adoption Connection is an opportunity for children to come together in the outdoors and learn about their surroundings through hands on activities such as Animal Tracking, Fire Building, Nature Crafts, and Outdoor Cooking, etc.  Children get to participate in a variety of individual and group activities and projects which require their cooperation and commitment.  The evenings end with campfires, stories, and pleasant dreams.

For many children this is the first time that they will find themselves in a group of peers who have all been adopted.  This has been an affirming and meaningful experience for many of our past participants.  Our staff also includes adopted adults, which is also another way our children feel a “connection” and valued.  In the evenings, we have a trained facilitator lead a fun and interactive workshop which allows children to talk openly with each other about being adopted.  Children have a safe and nurturing place to explore their feelings and thoughts.

  ADOPTION CONNECTION PARENT WORKSHOPS

$50 per workshop if child is not registered for Adoption Connection Camp

 Pro-Active Parenting of Adopted Children

July 30, 2010
Friday evening, 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Learn parenting and behavior management techniques that can assist you in being the most positive and effective parent that you strive to be. Your Presenters will share information and skills with you, that they have learned and used, from their experiences of both raising their own adopted children and working in the professional field with adopted children.  Parenting children is one of the most important things that you may ever do in your life, and it also may be one of the most challenging aspects of your life.  We have found that even during those challenging moments, you can learn to use techniques and skills which can help you maintain your patience and calmness” and eventually increase your serenity and joy in the parenting process.   We look forward to sharing with you some of these “tools” that will give you more “mileage” and stamina in this part of your life.

Parenting Adopted Children with Challenging Behaviors (An Introduction)

August 1, 2010
Sunday morning, 9am – 11am

People who adopt children do so for a variety of reasons.  But most of us have one thing in common, a sincere desire to create a safe and loving family.  As adoptive parents many of us have experienced unexpected challenges as we raise our children.  One of the challenges we may face is dealing with moderate or severe antisocial behavior.  This behavior may begin to appear in very young children (even infants and toddlers) or it may come up later in childhood.  These behaviors may include long and persistent tantrums, violent or disturbing threats and acts of violence, severe bouts of aggression, and/or a detached and almost “un-emotional” way of interacting.  Although some of the behaviors described may at times be typical for that developmental stage of the child, in this case we are describing a more intense behavior which is “abnormal.”  This behavior is usually very noticeable by the parent who is the primary caretaker, but may be dismissed or perceived as “minor” by the co-parent, friends and relatives of the family, school teachers and other involved adults (including therapist and psychologists.)  Usually everyone who interacts with the child will notice that the child is “different,” but can not necessarily describe how.  This workshop will describe some different behaviors which some Adopted Children exhibit and some of the research and effective techniques which have been used to help parents address these behaviors and find the help and resources they need to assist themselves and their child through this part of their life.
